The concept of hysterical birds came from a trip I took to India years ago. I remember visiting a Jain bird sanctuary in Delhi. The birds seemed to have lost their minds — many of them were hanging by their beaks from the tops of the cages or had twisted their heads around backwards. I couldn't begin to imagine what terrorized them into such a state.
